This week's focus: Focus

Focus is the ability to pay attention to something.  It’s important because it helps you accomplish specific tasks so you can complete your goals.  Without focus, you won’t be able to do simple things like study for a test, read a book, or drive a car.

This week's growth mindset challenge is... timed sprints! Over the course of the week, allow your students to practice having a growth mindset and give them the opportunity to improve the number of laps they can do at one time, or within a set amount of time.

Don't forget to end each session with a Mindful Moment! This week's Mindful Moment is Lazy River

Goal: Being able to notice distracting thoughts that are not about your intended target of attention is a basic concept of mindfulness. This tool provides an effective way for kids to practice noticing (self-awareness) the steady stream of thoughts, acknowledging them and dismissing them without engaging in them. An effective way for kids to practice noticing (self-awareness) the steady stream of thoughts, acknowledging them and dismissing them without engaging in them.

  1. Have students get into their seated and mindful body posture.
  2. Tell students to close their eyes and clear their minds.
  3. Start off with having them picture a river with tiny boats and rafts of all different sizes, shapes and colors flowing continuously by. These are called lazy rivers.
  4. Now have students picture themselves standing beside the river, watching everything comes toward them.
  5. Have them imagine that they are watching their thoughts, wishes, or feelings. Have them watch them come down the river.
  6. Tell the students to watch the boats as the they come closer to your body. , I want you to just watch them come and go and see what comes next. Let them go by.
  7. Tell the students to just notice what is happening and let it all go by.
  8. Have students take a deep breath in through their nose and out through their mouths. Open up their eyes.
