This Week's Focus: Optimism

Keep the glass half full.

Optimism refers to a positive mindset that strengthens us to try again rather than give up. Even in the face of adversity, optimistic people tend to focus on the positive aspects of situations and are able to approach challenges with resilience and determination.

We may not be able to control everything that happens to us, but we can control how we respond to difficult situations. This helps us maintain a constructive approach to life and all its challenges. We always enjoy looking on the bright side.

This week's growth mindset challenge is...mountain climbers! Over the course of the week, allow your students to practice having a growth mindset and give them the opportunity to improve their mountain climbs.

Don't forget to end each session with a Mindful Moment! This week's Mindful Moment is The Clouds in the Sky

Goal: Sometimes life can feel overwhelming. Your mind may be racing thoughts. You may feel really down about something that is going on that isn’t going well. It helps to feel happier in your body when you can recognize that you are a part of a larger universe.

  1. Have students lie on the ground in their mindful body which is relaxed, with deep breaths down to their belly button.
  2. Have students look up at the sky and tell them to take a moment to think about how much space is between them and the sky.
  3. Ask them to imagine space, the stars continuing up and beyond anything that they can see.
  4. Ask them if they can see the clouds? Have them think about what they look like and in their heads make observations. What do the clouds look like? Are they moving fast/slow?
  5. How are the clouds changing forms? What color are they?
  6. Tell the students that sometimes thoughts are like clouds. Sometimes our thoughts move quickly and sometimes they move slowly.
  7. Just like the clouds in the sky they move and change shape, they come and go.
  8. Tell them the next time they feel overwhelmed with negative thoughts to look up at the sky and take a few deep breaths.

Reflection Question: How does looking at the clouds make your body feel?
