This week's focus: Creativity

Creativity is your ability and willingness to generate new ideas, use information in new ways, and have an active imagination.  Creativity goes beyond art projects or creating new things.  Creativity is at the center of being a good thinker.  Creativity helps us be better problem solvers, more motivated, more in touch with ourselves, and less stressed.

This week's growth mindset challenge is...sit ups! Over the course of the week, allow your students to practice having a growth mindset and give them the opportunity to improve the number of sit ups they can do at one time, or within a set amount of time.

Please integrate at least one of these games into your sessions this week. While doing so, please also incorporate a discussion about creativity.

Don't forget to end each session with a Mindful Moment! This week's Mindful Moment is Imagine That Smell

Goal: This tool provides another way for kids to increase their mindfulness skills by using their sense of smell.

  1. Have Students get into their seated and mindful body posture. Have students close their eyes or keep them slightly open.
  2. Tell students to take a deep breath through their nose and let it slowly out through their mouth.
  3. Tell students that you want them to use their imaginations to pretend they are using their noses to remember how different things smell.
  4. Tell students to imagine that they are smelling popcorn. Have them take a deep breath in with their nose and out with their mouth.
  5. Ask students to imagine someone just mowed the grass. What does it smell like? Have them take a deep breath in with their nose and out with their mouth.
  6. Have students imagine they are eating an orange. What does it taste like? Have them take a deep breath in with their nose and out with their mouth.
  7. Have students pretend they are by a fireplace or a campfire and the smoke blows in their face? What does it smell like? Have them take a deep breath in with their nose and out with their mouth.
  8. Have students pretend to be on the sand next to the ocean, have them remember the salt air. What does it smell like? Have them take a deep breath in with their nose and out with their mouth.
  9. Have students pretend to be holding flowers, what do the flowers smell like? Have them take a deep breath in with their nose and out with their mouth.
  10. Have students imagine they are smelling their favorite soup. What does it smell like? Have them take a deep breath in with their nose and out with their mouth.
  11. Now take a last deep breath and open your eyes and bring your attention back to the coach.

Reflection Question: What smells were you able to imagine? Were they good, neutral, or bad? Did they bring back any memories?
